Breed Standards:
A Scottish Terrier should have a long head that is proportionate to the body. They should have large noses and dark, almond shaped eyes. Scottish Terriers' ears should sit closely together on top of the head and be pointed for an alert look. They should have long, straight backs with strongly built hind ends.
History:
Scottish Terriers are thought to be one of the oldest of the Highland terrier breeds. They are closely related to a number of breeds including Skye, Dandie Dinmont, Cairn and West Highland White Terriers.
Scottish Terriers were originally bred to hunt and kill vermin on farms. They were also used to hunt badgers and foxes in the Highlands of Scotland. The breed was developed to acquire a strong tail so that people could easily pull them out of holes when they would dig after vermin. Scottish Terriers are keen at digging holes, like most terriers, whose name derives from the same root as "terre", French for "earth".
The breed was introduced to the Americas in the 1890's and experienced a popularity surge in the 1930's. Due to their prominence at the time, a Scottish Terrier was chosen to be a token for the board game Monopoly, which was created in 1935.
Fun Facts:
The Scottish Terrier is the only breed of dog to have been in the White House three times. President Franklin D. Roosevelt was well known for his love of Scottish Terriers and owned several dogs of the breed. Presidents Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush also had Scottish Terriers as companion dogs.
Recommendations:
Bright, colourful collars really stand out on the dark Scottish Terrier coat. Any style is suitable, whether it's a nylon or leather dog collar. Trendy tartan patterns are also quite fitting for the breed.
