Breed Standards:
The Labrador Retriever has a strong, muscular body, fit for swimming. The tail is straight and very powerful like that of an otter. The toes are webbed and the coat is waterproof. The length of the Labrador should be equal to the height from the feet to the withers. The head is broad and the ears hang slightly above the eyes. The eyes of a Labrador are known to be kind and expressive. Acceptable colours are brown and hazel. The muzzle is a medium length with a strong jaw.
History:
The Labrador Retriever originated as a retrieving dog in Newfoundland & Labrador, Canada in the early 1800’s. Before they were named Labrador Retrievers, they were known as the St. John’s Dog.
They were used primarily to aid fisherman, by retrieving the nets full of fish. Journal entries of fisherman at the time, claim that the dogs loved to be on the ship during the sailing ventures as well. They were also used to flush and retrieve game, most notably birds.
During the First World War, Labrador Retrievers saved the lives of many wounded Canadian soldiers, and used their strong sense of smell to detect buried mines. Due to the breed’s loving nature and affection, they make excellent companions for people of all ages. The Labrador Retriever is the most popular breed of dog in the entire world. Because of their loyalty and alertness, they are also the number one breed used in guide dog services.
Fun Facts:
A black Labrador Retriever named Jake has received more bravery awards than any other dog in the world. He is best known for his work retrieving victims during the 9/11 rescue operation and Hurricane Katrina.
