Breed Profiles
From Wolf to Man's Best Friend
Dogs are perhaps the most wide and varied species on the planet. From the few inches high Chihuahua to the few feet high Great Dane, the range of dog breeds is enormous. Breed variations cover all shapes, sizes, colours, coats and behaviours imaginable to create a wonderful diversity.
All domestic dogs have a common origin as a sub-species of the Grey Wolf. Many breeds still carry strong resemblance to their lupine ancestors, such as the Shikoku and Alaskan Husky, while others are drastically different. Humans have selectively bred dogs for centuries resulting in the massive variety of modern dog breeds.
Dogs can be classified in many categories including working breeds, hounds, terriers, toys and teacups. The complex family tree of domesticated dogs is fun to look at and compare all their exterior differences. One trait all dogs share, though, is loving loyalty to their owners. After all, the saying "dogs are man’s best friend" doesn’t define a particular breed!
The following dog breed profiles list general breed specifications and histories. The profiles look at unique dog breed traits such as country of origin, size, lifespan, history and recommendations for the best breed specific collars and leashes.
