Breed Standards: It is a common misconception that Whippets are miniature Greyhounds. They are their own breed, however, their body proportions are very similar to the Greyhound. They have a long and narrow, muzzle, head and body, making them aerodynamic and incredibly fast. They have a deep chest and small waist. The legs are long and slender, as is the tail.

History: Whippets were originally bred in the United Kingdom for hunting small prey. They rely on their excellent eyesight rather than their sense of smell to hunt. Records of the Whippet date back to the 1600’s, in paintings with British and French royalty. Historians believe the breed actually originated in ancient Rome.

Due to their similarities to the Greyhound, the Whippet has been bred for course gaming and racing, reaching speeds of up to 35 miles per hour. American textile workers brought the breed to America in the late 1800’s where they made Whippet racing popular on their own continent. Whippets are becoming increasingly popular for use in agility and flyball.

Fun Facts: Whippet racing was popular amongst the United Kingdom working class long before Greyhound racing.

Recommendations: Dainty Whippets require specially made wide dog collars to prevent their fine hair from rubbing off. Use a long dog leash on Whippets to let them have a little play room when out for a walk.
