Weimaraner Breed Information

Weimaraner

Breed Name: Weimaraner (aka Vorstenhund, Grey Ghost)

Country of Origin: Germany

Average Lifespan: 10 - 13 years

Size: Large (63–68 cm, 25–32 kg)

Breed Classification: Sporting

Coat:
  • Short and sleek
  • Silver-grey in colour
  • Very minimal grooming required

Characteristics:
  • Incredibly loyal and loving
  • Noble guardians, can be territorial
  • Very intelligent
  • Active and energetic

Breed Standards: The Weimaraner should be athletic and muscular. The eyes are generally a light grey or blue. The nickname grey ghost stems from the breed’s silver coat and pale eyes. Occasionally a small white marking appears on the chest, which is the only acceptable colour variation. The back is strong, and slopes down slightly from the withers. The chest is deep and the shoulders are set back, leading to long, straight forelegs.

History: Weimaraners were originally bred in early 19th century Germany as hunting dogs. Primarily, they hunted large game and only German royalty were permitted to own one. Towards the latter years of the 1800’s, hunting small game became more popular and the breed was used to hunt rabbits and fowl. The dog was named after Karl August, Grand Duke of Weimer, who was a proud owner of the breed. By the 1940’s the Weimaraner had become an in-demand breed in North Americans, and underwent a surge in popularity.

Fun Facts: Photographer William Wegman prominently featured Weimaraners in much of his work. The dogs were dressed in human clothes for the photos. These photos are popular in contemporary art galleries and as pop culture icons.

Recommendations: The silvery coat of Weimaraner's mean that most colours of dog collars will look fantastic on them. Elegant, elaborate designs add to the drama! Don't forget to include a dog ID tag with any collar for your dog's safety.
