| History: | The Rhodesian Ridgeback originated in the Cape Colonies of South Africa. The breed was originally named African Lion Dog, and is still known by this in some countries. The dog was bred as a guard dog, used to alarm its owners if a lion was near. The breed was also able to intimidate a lion and keep it at bay long enough for its owners to reach safety or to kill the animal before it attacked. Over the years, Europeans and Americans have used the breed for game hunting and as a loyal companion dog. There is still much debate over whether the Ridgeback is better suited as a sight hound or a scent hound. |
| Fun Facts: | It is widely believed that a group called Khoikhoi, comprised of native South Africans, are responsible for creating the breed along with Dutch and German immigrants. |
| Recommendations: | Rhodesian Ridgeback dogs are big and need large, thick leather dog collars and dog leashes to keep them safe. |
