Papillon Breed Information

Papillon Dog

Breed Name: Papillon (Phalene)

Country of Origin: Italy

Average Lifespan: 12 - 15 years

Size: Small (8–11 inches, 7–10 lbs)

Breed Classification: Toy

Coat:
  • Parti-coloured, meaning white and one other colour
  • Second colour can be black, tan, brown, lemon, red or sable
  • Coat is short as a puppy, and long and silky as an adult
  • Requires minimal grooming

Characteristics:
  • Graceful and elegant
  • Friendly and loving
  • Energetic and playful

Breed Standards: The Papillon has large ears, which stand erect and are covered with silky fringe. The ears are not white, but coloured on the front and back, and covering both eyes. A blaze of white hair comes down from the forehead between the eyes, and around the nose. The head is rounded between the ears, and the muzzle is short and narrow. The breed should be tiny, dainty and fine-boned.

History: Although the Papillon’s true country of origin is under dispute, the earliest paintings of the dog date back to 16th century Italy. However, many historians believe that Belgium and Spain are also likely candidates. Papillons were originally bred as companion dogs and watch dogs, due to their alertness and loyalty. Although they are dainty in appearance, they are surprisingly athletic. In recent years, the Papillon has become the most popular toy breed for use in agility courses.

Fun Facts: Papillons were one of the many breeds owned and loved by Louis XIV and Marie Antoinette. Of her many dogs, it is claimed that the Papillon was Antoinette’s favourite. When allowed to bring one dog to her prison cell for comfort, as she awaited execution, Marie chose her little Papillon. Marie Antoinette herself is responsible for the name of the breed. She called hers “La Petite Papillon”, which translates to little butterfly, because the ears of a Papillon resemeble the wings of a butterfly. The name has lived on through the centuries and the breed is still known by this today.

Recommendations: Dainty Papillons should have a dog harness that doesn't put pressure on the trachea. The unique design of Buddy Belt dog harnesses fit around the chest and put no pressure on the dog's neck.
