| Breed Standards: | The breed has a flat, narrow head, with a long, pointed noise. The eyes are small and black, and the ears can be naturally erect or "button eared" meaning they flop over. The chest is solid, but more deep than wide. Back should be slightly arched with sloping shoulders. |
| History: | Manchester Terriers are believed to be the oldest of all the dogs in the Terrier group. Although the breed is said to have originated in Great Britain, many experts believe the dog seen on many ancient Egyptian carvings is a Manchester Terrier. The breed was used as a ratter during post-renaissance era England, as the city had extremely poor sanitation and vermin roamed the streets. The breed was known as the "Black and Tan Terrier" until the late 1800s when the breed was resurrected after near extinction. One theory is that a nobleman by the name Manchester went to great lengths to salvage the diminishing breed, and the name was changed to honour him. Others believe it is because the city of Manchester became the centre for the breed during this time. |
| Fun Facts: | Dogandcollar.com's spokesdog is a Toy Manchester Terrier named Billie from Toronto, ON. |
| Recommendations: | Collars that are gentle on the fine hair of Manchester Terriers are best. Choose the Round Rolled Collar for a dog collar that won't easily rub off hair. |
