Maltese Dog Breed Information

Maltese Dog

Breed Name: Maltese (Bichon Maltaise)

Country of Origin: Malta

Average Lifespan: 13 - 15 years

Size: Small (4–7 lbs, 7–9 inches)

Breed Classification: Toy

Coat:
  • Extremely long, straight hair
  • Thick, yet silky and shiny
  • Coat is white only
  • Maltese shed very minimally
  • Unless clipped, requires plenty of grooming

Characteristics:
  • Fearless and alert
  • Cheerful and happy
  • Loyal and loving

Breed Standards: The Maltese is very small and compact. The dog is slightly longer in the body than it is tall. The head is slightly rounded and the feet are tiny and round. The tail should be carried very gracefully over the back, covered in long, flowing wisps of hair.

History: The Maltese is an ancient dog, originating on the island of Malta in the Mediterranean Sea. However, many believe the Maltese made it’s way to Malta by way of the Middle East, as The Isle of Malta was a large trading port during Roman times. Before the dog was known simply as the Maltese, it had several names including Roman Ladies Dog and Maltaise Dog. They were first used to hunt rodents, but people quickly began breeding the Maltese as a companion dog due to their size and fondness for cuddling.

Fun Facts: The Maltese is known as the dog of queens, as they have been the loving pet of Marie Antoinette, Queen Elizabeth I, Queen Victoria, Mary Queen of Scots and, of course, the Roman Queen of Malta.

Recommendations: The Maltese's long, soft coat needs a dog collar that will help stop matting and tangles. Try a rolled leather collar.
