| Breed Standards: | The chest size of the Jack Russell Terrier is an extremely important characteristic in the show ring. It must be thick and sturdy, not too small and not too large. The length of the legs from the withers should equal the length of the straight, level back, creating a square-like appearance. The hindquarters are also straight, muscular and strong. Jack Russells with short legs that are turned out at the knees are common, however these dogs are not purebred. The breed has a natural long, straight and upright tail, which is usually docked as a puppy. |
| History: | Jack Russell Terriers were bred as exceptional hunters, ratters and experts at go-to-ground, making them excellent diggers. They have been used to hunt large rabbits and fox, nearly the same size as themselves. Jack Russells are known to be unaware of their size and think they are able to take on much larger dogs and animals. They are also known for their territorial and protective instinct. In 2007, a Jack Russell named George gave his life to save several children who were being attacked by a pitbull, by turning the dog’s aggression onto himself. The breed was distinguished from Fox Terriers in the late 1700’s, by Reverend John Russell, whom the breed was named after. The Reverend never registered his dogs and to this day, few Kennel Clubs around the world recognize the breed. |
| Fun Facts: | Jack Russell Terriers are a favourite among television and movie makers. The most famous probably being Moose and Soccer, from two very popular 1990 television shows. Moose played the loveable and humorous Eddie on the hit sitcom Frasier, while Soccer played the intelligent and curious Wishbone on the children’s show of the same name. |
