| Breed Standards: | The Ibizan Hound has a slender and elegant appearance, but at the same time, they are thick boned and solid. The legs are also slender, but sturdy. The ears are large and stand upright. Ibizans have striking amber coloured eyes. The breed has a long, slim neck with a narrow face and muzzle. The back is level, leading to a long, straight tail. |
| History: | It is widely believed that the Ibizan Hound is an ancient breed. However, recent research leads experts to believe it is more modern, and was bred to imitate the look of a more ancient breed that no longer exists. This newer breed originated hundreds of years ago on the island of Ibiza in Spain. It is thought that the Spaniards attempted to mimic the ancient dog because legend claims that in biblical times, it was the watchdog of the dead, and protector of the soul. They were bred for the look of an ancient breed, and for the ability to hunt small animals. Because of its agility and athleticism, the Ibizan Hound has come to be a great escape artist and can jump to incredible heights. |
| Fun Facts: | In Spanish folklore, the Ibizan Hound is a sign of prosperity, and to kill an Ibizan Hound, even if accidental, equals bad luck for the remainder of your life. |
