Breed Standards: French Bulldogs are fairly small, muscular and compact dogs. The ears are naturally erect and the tail is short and often corkscrewed, but never curly.

History: The exact origins of the French Bulldog is disputed, however, it is most widely believed that they originated in the north of France during the early 1800’s. They were bred to be ratters as well as loving family dogs. The latter reason is why French Bulldogs are currently undergoing a surge of popularity. When the breed was first gaining popularity in France, it struck the fancy of British and Russian royalty, which lead to the breed popping up all across Europe.

One American aristocrat purchased a French Bulldog in 1912, insuring the dog for an astonishing $750 at the time. The dog was then brought to America aboard the Titanic, surviving the trip in one of the 1st class lifeboats.

Fun Facts: Many original paintings of the Moulin Rouge can-can dancers depict the ladies holding and cuddling their little French Bulldog companions.

Recommendations: Compact French Bulldogs can easily slip out of standard dog collars. We recommend the comfortable design of the Buddy Belt Dog Harness for French Bulldogs.
