| Breed Standards: | There is a wide range of acceptable traits allowed in Chihuahua conformation. The size of the dog is allowed within a generous range and the coat can be of any colour. Dog show judges look for a round, apple-shaped skull with large, wide set eyes and erect ears. The tail should be sickle-shaped, ideally looped over with the tip just touching the back. Chihuahuas should have straight legs with muscular hindquarters and dainty feet and ankles. |
| History: | Chihuahuas are thought by some to be descendants of the Chinese Crested Dog. It has been theorized that Chinese hairless dogs were transported across the Bering Strait from Asia to Alaska and eventually cross-bred with the ancient Toltec and Aztec dog, the Techichi. Techichi were the pets of royalty and the wealthy serving as companion dogs. They also played a role in religious ceremonies. Modern Chihuahuas were discovered in the Chihuahua region of Mexico in 1850. The American Kennel Club first registered a Chihuahua in 1905. They are currently the smallest breed of dog in the world. |
| Fun Facts: | Their spunky personality and tiny stature have made Chihuahuas a favourite for advertisements, movie roles and celebrity arm candy. A Chihuahua was used in hugely successful ads by fast food restaurant Taco Bell while the role of "Bruiser", Elle Woods' faithful canine companion, was played by a Chihuahua in the Legally Blonde films. Numerous celebrities have pet Chihuahuas, including Sharon Osbourne with her dog "Mimi" and Paris Hilton with her high profile pet "Tinkerbell". |
| Recommendations: | The small size and fiery attitudes of Chihuahuas call for extreme designs in dog fashion. Rhinestone accented collars and leashes highlight their sparkling personalities while bright colours add extra happiness. We love the look of the designer dog collars on Chihuahuas, especially in bright, fun shades. If your Chihuahua isn't so girly, fun spiked dog collars are also fitting matches for feisty Chihuahuas. |
