English Bulldog Breed Information

Bulldog

Breed Name: Bulldog (aka British Bulldog, English Bulldog)

Country of Origin: England

Average Lifespan: 12 years

Size: Medium (53–55 lbs, 11–14 inches)

Breed Classification: Non-Sporting

Coat:
  • Short, sleek and smooth
  • Colour can be fawn, brindle, red, white and/or any combination of these colours

Characteristics:
  • Gentle, docile and friendly
  • Tend to become extremely attached to family, and get along well with children and other animals
  • Mature adults are generally low-energy and cuddly, however they do require daily exercise and can become overweight easily

Breed Standards: The Bulldog is extremely muscular, stocky and heavy set. The head is massive with a short muzzle and large teeth. The lower jaw is pronounced and undershot, and the nose is large and black. The bulldog’s skin falls in loose folds over the forehead and face. Its’ mouth forms into what appears to be a frown. The eyes are wide-set and black. A bulldog’s ears are thin and folded, while the tail is very short.

History: Bulldogs were originally bred in 16th century England, by crossing mastiffs with pugs. They were bred to perform the old English tradition of bullbaiting, which became a very popular pastime in the 17th century. The extremely cruel “sport” has been illegal for more than a century, but the bulldogs retain the traditional looks of the early breed. However, over time, breeders have worked to weed out the aggression of the early breed, which has resulted in the friendly, docile bulldog known today.

Fun Facts: Many people choose a bulldog when they desire a watchdog because it is a common misconception that they are aggressive and will attack intruders. However, there have been numerous accounts of homes being robbed while bulldogs sat and watched. It is far more likely that the burglars were attacked with kisses and slobber.

Recommendations: Thick-necked Bulldogs will thank you for choosing a dog harness like the Buddy Belt over a traditional dog collar.
