History: Beagle-type dogs have existed for over 2,000 years. The breed is thought to have lineage of a mixture of other various hounds including the Talbot Hound and the Southern Hound. The modern standard of the breed was developed in Essex, Britain in the 1830s.

Beagles of questionable standards were first exported to the United States in the 1840s where the current breed qualities were developed over time. Beagles continue to be popular in North America and have multiple clubs and groups dedicated to the breed.

Fun Facts: There are thought to be many varieties of Beagle that have become extinct over the years. This includes the Glove Beagle, Pocket Beagle and rough-coated Beagle. The glove and pocket varieties were miniature versions of the breed that joined the hunt by riding in the saddlebags of the hunters’ horses.

Recommendations: Strong, thick dog collars are most suitable for Beagles. The Beagle’s urge to follow any scent they pick up my have them pulling hard on their leash, so be sure to choose an equally strong leather leash.
