Breed Standards: Airedales are the largest of all terriers, hence the nickname “King of Terriers.” Both sexes should be muscular, sturdy and big-boned. The head is long and flat, with small, dark eyes.

History: The Airedale is named after the region of its birthplace, a valley in the West Riding of Yorkshire. Originally bred for “go to ground” and to accompany hounds on hunts. Due to the Airedale’s intelligence and powerful scent, the breed quickly became known as a multi-purpose, sporting terrier in the 18th century. Airedales have also been used in many battles, including the first World War, to deliver messages and find wounded soldiers on the battlefield. Before the German Shepherd became the breed of choice as a police dog, the Airedale was the most popular partner to accompany officers. President Roosevelt claimed “Airedales can do anything another dog can do, only better”. Initially bred near the river Aire in Yorkshire, the breed has come to love playing and splashing in the water.

Fun Facts: Airedales were one of the few breeds accompanying British aristocrats aboard the Titanic.

Recommendations: Try a brightly coloured dog collar to contrast against the dark Airedale coat. Match with a long dog leash for more freedom on your daily walk.
