Summer Safety for Dogs
Safety is important while having fun in the hot summer months, and not just for humans. Dogs have important health and safety needs as well.
Dog Safety Tips
Here are some tips to help you and your canine enjoy the dog days of summer:
- Have fresh, cool water available for your dog at all times.
- Make sure there is sufficient shade and/or shelter available when outdoors.
- Never leave your dog inside a vehicle, even for a few minutes.
- When the windows in your moving car are down, secure loose dogs to a leash and harness.
- Keep sunscreen on hand to touch up your dog’s sensitive nose.
- Watch for signs of heat stress such as excessive panting, disorientation, staring or anxious expressions and weakness.
- Exercise your dog in the early morning or evening to avoid heat stress.
- To save your dog’s paws, keep them off of hot asphalt and opt for grass or the sidewalk.
- If you decide to shave your dog to keep them cool, remember sunscreen!
- When boating, consider investing in a doggie lifejacket.
- Know where your dog is at all times, and if they fall overboard, cut the engine immediately.
- For older dogs, consider making a small ramp to help them enter and exit the boat.
- Contact your veterinarian regarding summer safety related to bug bites and vaccinations.
